Auckland Marathon Returns as Thousands Prepare to Run the City

More than 17,000 registered runners and walkers are preparing to take part in the 2025 Barfoot & Thompson Auckland Marathon presented by ASICS this Sunday, 2 November.

Now in its 34th edition, New Zealand’s largest and most iconic festival of running will once again showcase the best of Tāmaki Makaurau, with participants taking on one of five distances: the Barfoot & Thompson Auckland Marathon, Garmin Half Marathon, One New Zealand 11km Traverse, United Airlines 5km, and the Barfoot & Thompson 2.2km Kids Run.

The event guides athletes through the CBD, along the waterfront, and across the iconic Harbour Bridge, with all distances finishing in Victoria Park – the vibrant heart of the Auckland Marathon.

Auckland Marathon Regional Director Nicky van den Bos says she’s thrilled to be part of an event that holds such a special place in the hearts of Aucklanders and the wider running community.

“The Auckland Marathon is more than just a race – it’s a celebration of movement, community, and the incredible spirit of Tāmaki Makaurau. Whether you’re chasing a personal best, running for a cause, or simply soaking up the atmosphere, this event brings people together in a way that’s truly inspiring. We can’t wait to welcome everyone to the start line this Sunday,” said van den Bos.

“It’s also a chance to connect with others and enjoy everything New Zealand’s largest city has to offer. From the stunning views on course to the post-race celebrations in our culturally diverse city, there’s no better way to experience Auckland than with thousands of others who’ve just crossed the finish line. Whether it’s brunch in the city, lunch in the suburbs, or a cold drink on the waterfront – the city comes alive after the race,” she said.

As one of Auckland’s most iconic sporting events, the Auckland Marathon continues to energise the city and inspire community pride – something Tātaki Auckland Unlimited is proud to champion.

“Auckland Council Events is proud to support Auckland Marathon,” says Annie Dundas, Director Destination at Tātaki Auckland Unlimited. “Every year this event continues to bring the energy and showcase Auckland at its best, attracting locals and visitors alike to not only enjoy the race but make the most of the experience before and after the finish line. It’s a fantastic example of how events like this contribute to the city’s energy and economy and enhance our reputation as a world-class destination.”

Athletes in the Barfoot & Thompson Auckland Marathon, Garmin Half Marathon and One New Zealand 11km Traverse will begin their journey on the North Shore, making their way along the Busway from Smales Farm, across the Harbour Bridge, and through the CBD. Marathoners will also complete an out-and-back section along Tamaki Drive. The United Airlines 5km starts in Karanga Plaza, while the Barfoot & Thompson Kids Run begins on Fanshawe Street.

“There’s still time to join the more than 17,000 athletes already registered to run or walk the Auckland Marathon this Sunday. While the 11km Traverse has already sold out, entries remain open until 5pm on Saturday 1 November for the Marathon, Half Marathon, 5km, and Kids Run, so if you don’t want to miss out on being a part of New Zealand’s biggest celebration of running then sign up today,” van den Bos added.

Charity remains a core part of the Auckland Marathon experience, with thousands of participants fundraising for causes close to their hearts. There are nine official charities aligned with the event this year, with many more benefiting from individual fundraising efforts. Over 6,000 donators have raised more than $380,000 so far.
