It can happen to anyone
Every year, an incredible group of Kiwis run or walk the Auckland Marathon as part of the Cancer Society team. For many of them, like Lucy, it’s also very personal:
“In November last year I was diagnosed with melanoma. After this devastating diagnosis, I had a biopsy, followed by surgery. I then had an agonising month of waiting to find out whether the cancer had spread. On January the 9th I received the very good news that it hadn’t.”
This will be Lucy’s fourth half marathon. While she’s hoping to beat her personal best, it has a deeper meaning:
“Now it is my turn to give back. I am much more aware of the reality of cancer now, how it can really turn your whole world upside down and how it can happen to anyone.
“This is my way of taking what happened to me and turning it into something positive. I want to help Cancer Society provide services for people with cancer and help prevent cancer for future generations. I also want help to raise awareness about melanoma and the importance of getting moles checked regularly.”
With many of our key fundraising events cancelled this year, supporters like Lucy are making a huge difference.
